Originally conceived to build upon the success of the NFL and professional wrestling, in 2001 the WWE created a joint venture with NBC to form the XFL. The XFL was launched as a radically different concept for presenting football, with exciting new technology and fewer penalties or rules.
The “Chicago Enforcers” was the first team announced by the XFL. The team played at the historic Soldier Field (pre-renovation), and was expected to be coached by the legendary Dick Butkus.
Michael was signed immediately by the team to assist in developing the ‘in-house’ show, and to serve as a model for the new, high energy approach that would replace that of the traditional Public Address announcer. Michael’s presence as the live stadium announcer was included prominently during the NBC network broadcast of the first game. Jesse Ventura and Jim Ross anchored the broadcast for that frigid night on the Chicago lake front.
The XFL’s opening game took place on February 3, 2001 immediately following the NFL’s Super Bowl. The first game was watched on NBC by an estimated 14 million viewers. During the telecast, NBC switched over to the game between the Orlando Rage and the Chicago Enforcers, which built up a 9.5 Nielsen rating. The XFL began with better than expected TV ratings.
